Dermal fillers are gel-like solutions that are injected into the skin to significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds, restore and add volume, as well as enhance and reshape areas throughout the face.
Common areas fillers are used include the “laugh lines” or nasolabial folds, “marionette lines,” in and around the lips, cheeks, temples, and tear troughs. When injected by an experienced medical provider, with the proper placement and amount of volume added, dermal fillers can provide natural-looking results with minimal downtime. The type of filler used, where it’s placed, and how fast you metabolize it, are all factors that will cause individual results and product longevity to vary. Your medical provider will help determine the appropriate filler and volume needed for you during a consultation.
There are several different kinds of dermal fillers, each with its own chemical make-up, longevity, and varying degree of softness. Common types include hyaluronic acid (HA) and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers. Dermal fillers may be combined with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for immediate and intermediate facial rejuvenation and enhancement.
HA fillers are the most common, and are composed of Hyaluronic acid, a type of natural sugar present in body tissues. When in gel form, they bind with water and swell causing a smoothing/filling effect. HA fillers are soft and malleable, making them ideal for use in the lips, around the mouth, and below the eyes. Depending on the brand and how they’ve been chemically modified and cross linked these fillers typically last anywhere between 6-24 months.
Another common type of dermal filler is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite and designed for injection into deeper tissue. Calcium hydroxylapatite is a type of mineral that is commonly found in human teeth and bones. When calcium hydroxylapatite particles are suspended in a gel-like solution and injected, they form a scaffold for new collagen to grow around, producing long lasting effects up to 18 months.
